Since the introduction of the Data Protection Act securing information that you hold on your employees, customers and of course your business has never been more important. Data is one of the most valuable assets any business has today and some companies can, and do go to extreme lengths to protect its security. But it’s interesting to note that a survey by the Independent Oracle User Group (IOUG) found that:
48% of businesses admitted that they were not aware of all of their own databases that contained sensitive information.
75% of businesses cannot prevent special access users from tampering with databases.
ABC Ltd is a business operating in the finance sector with 16 employees and a healthy growing client base. This company understands its data is its most valuable asset and takes every measure at its disposal to protect it. As a small company they don’t have an IT manager they use the services of an IT company to look after its network infrastructure.
The question is if 75% of businesses can’t prevent special access/third party users from tampering with data, as the CEO how do you protect your company from becoming one of these businesses?
Not an easy question to answer but one positive action that you could take is to ensure that any supplier that has access to your data is ISO 27001 accredited.
